Meet the Composers of Canadian Opera Fest 2019

Vera Causa Opera's 2019 Canadian Opera Fest showcases the talents of two local composers: Emma Verdonk and Dylan Langan, in collaboration with our Opera Concept Competition winners. Read all about these incredible young composers here!

 

Emma Verdonk- Refracted and The Shoemaker's Orphans

Emma grew up in Brantford, ON, surrounded by a large and musical family. At an early age, her mother taught her to play piano and once she had an understanding of the language of music, she began voice and violin lessons. Emma has just finished her third year at Wilfrid Laurier University where she is studying Community Music. She also pursues composition and throughout the past year, has had the opportunity to write for orchestra, string quartet, and various small ensembles. After finishing her undergraduate degree, she hopes to continue on to a masters in composition.

Dylan Langan- The Village Girl, La jugement, and L'étrange et belle

Dylan Langan is a Canadian Conductor, Composer, and Baritone. He is the Founder and General Director of Vera Causa Opera (VCO). Previously, Langan has served as the Music Director of the Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra, Assistant Conductor of the Guelph Symphony Orchestra (2015-2018), and Conducting Intern at Opera on the Avalon (2016). Langan is a recipient of the Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers, the William Thompson Scholarship, and the Merriam School of Music Award.

Langan has composed (music and libretti), directed, and conducted seven operas, including: Rise of the Roaches, The Death of Maria, Echo, Madness, Little Red Riding Hood, Dracula, & The Village Girl / L'étrange et belle / La jugement. Upcoming opera premieres include Rapunzel and The Dino Opera (VCO | Double-Bill Winter 2020). Other compositions include two symphonies, and over 400 songs spanning across genres such as metal, rock, pop, funk, electronic, and classical. https://www.dylanlangan.com

In his spare time, Langan enjoys fixing his car and being a Trekkie.
